I’m Michael Taylor, the person behind ABM Orkney. I know first-hand how challenging it can be to keep on top of bookkeeping and tax while running a business—that’s why I started this firm. My goal is simple: to make accounting as painless as possible for businesses like yours.

My Background

Before moving into accounting, I spent nearly 20 years working at sea, from purser on passenger ferries to seaman in the North Sea. Working in a fast-paced, highly regulated industry taught me the importance of organisation, accuracy, and financial management—all of which are essential in accounting.

After coming ashore, I trained in accounting and bookkeeping, gaining AAT Level 2 and 3 qualifications and working towards AAT Level 4 (SCQF Level 8 in Scotland). That journey led me to start ABM Orkney, where I now help businesses across the UK take control of their finances without the stress.

What I Do Now

I work with a wide range of clients, from sole traders and landlords to partnerships and limited companies, handling everything from bookkeeping and tax returns to payroll and VAT. Whether it’s helping a tour operator sort out the Tour Operators’ Margin Scheme, filing a Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction tax return, or making sure a retail business stays on top of its VAT, I take the hassle out of accounting so my clients can focus on running their business.

I also help businesses using QuickBooks, Xero, Apron, and Xenon, making sure they get the most out of their accounting software and stay on track with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
